What is an X-ray?
An X-ray is a quick, non-invasive imaging test that uses a small amount of ionizing radiation to create pictures of bones, joints, lungs and other structures. It is one of the most common diagnostic tests ordered by family doctors, emergency physicians and specialists.
Common X-ray exams at RoyalView X-Ray & Ultrasound
We perform a wide range of X-ray services in Toronto, including:
- Chest X-ray – for cough, infection, shortness of breath, rib pain and follow-up after treatment.
- Abdomen X-ray – to evaluate abdominal pain, suspected obstruction or severe constipation.
- Spine X-ray (cervical, thoracic, lumbar) – for neck and back pain, scoliosis and degenerative changes.
- Pelvis X-ray – for hip and pelvic pain or trauma.
- Extremity and joint X-ray – hands, wrists, elbows, shoulders, hips, knees, ankles, feet and toes for injuries, arthritis and pain.
Your referring provider will indicate which region needs to be imaged on your requisition form.
Do I need an appointment?
Most general X-ray exams do not require an appointment. In many cases you can come on a walk-in basis during clinic hours with your requisition and OHIP card.
Occasionally, certain specialized studies may require a booked time. If you are unsure, please contact the clinic before you arrive.
How to prepare for your X-ray
For most X-ray exams, no special preparation is needed. We recommend that you:
- Bring your original requisition form and valid OHIP card.
- Wear comfortable clothing without metal zippers, snaps or buttons over the area being imaged.
- Remove jewelry and accessories that may interfere with the images.
If your test has specific instructions, our staff will review them with you when the exam is booked.
What to expect during the exam
- You will be positioned by the technologist so the area of interest is correctly aligned with the X-ray detector.
- You may be asked to hold still or briefly hold your breath while the image is taken.
- The exposure itself takes only a fraction of a second, and most exams are completed in a few minutes.
After your X-ray at RoyalView X-Ray and Ultrasound, a radiologist interprets the images and sends a report to your referring doctor, who will then discuss the results with you.
